The API VS5(model LJYA) pump is a vertically suspended, single-casing cantilever pump designed in accordance with API 610 (ISO 13709). Its defining characteristic is the “true” cantilever design: there are no shaft supports, bearings, bushings, or seals below the mounting plate. All bearings are housed in a cartridge above the mounting plate, completely isolated from the pumped fluid. This configuration eliminates the risk of bearing failure from abrasive or contaminated fluids.
The VS5 pump is a wet-pit installation with a separate discharge pipe running externally alongside the column up to the mounting plate. The casing is a single-volute, radially split design. The impeller may be closed, semi-open, or open, depending on the application; closed impellers are standard for clean services, while open or vortex impellers handle solids-laden fluids with greater tolerance.
The shaft is a rigid, one-piece design with a first critical speed well above operating speed, ensuring smooth running despite the cantilevered overhang. The bearing housing above the mounting plate contains heavy-duty roller bearings in a permanently aligned double-row arrangement capable of absorbing thrust in either direction. Bearings are grease-lubricated per API 610 requirements for VS5 pumps, with a stabilized housing temperature rise not exceeding 39 K above ambient.
The seal chamber is located at the cover plate and seals tank vapor rather than process liquid. It accommodates packing as standard, or API 682 cartridge mechanical seals for vapor-tight service. No shaft seal is required below the plate, which is particularly valuable for toxic, explosive, or environmentally hazardous fluids where leakage must be strictly prevented.
Typical capacities range from small flows up to approximately 600 m³/h, with some specialized designs reaching higher. Heads typically reach 50–80 m, though extended suction pipe arrangements can achieve greater immersion depths without increasing pump length. Operating temperatures span from approximately −20°C to +200°C, with optional construction available up to 300°C. Maximum suspension lengths of up to 2.5 m are standard, and greater depths are achievable with extended suction pipes.
