The API VS4(model FY) pump is a vertically suspended, single-casing volute-type centrifugal pump designed in accordance with API 610 (ISO 13709). Its defining characteristic is the wet-pit installation with a separate discharge column: the pump casing is submerged in a sump, tank, or below-grade vault, while the discharge pipe runs externally and parallel to the column pipe up to the mounting plate at grade level. This configuration eliminates the need for a pressurized discharge pipe through the column, simplifying sealing and reducing the risk of shaft-seal leakage in the vertical direction.
The VS4 pump comprises four primary components: the submerged pump end, column pipe, discharge column, and mounting plate with driver support. The casing is a single-volute, radially split design with end suction and top discharge, self-venting to prevent air locks during startup . A suction strainer is typically fitted to screen oversize particles that could damage the impeller or casing .
The impeller is commonly of the open or semi-open type, hydraulically balanced to minimize axial thrust. Open impeller designs with concentric volute casings are particularly suited to low-flow, high-head duties, where they substantially reduce radial and axial loads on the shaft and bearings compared to traditional volute designs . For abrasive or high-temperature services, semi-open impellers and wide running clearances allow safe operation without seizure from thermal expansion .
The shaft may be a single piece or divided into sections connected by rigid couplings, depending on the required submergence depth. Intermediate radial bushings, fitted between column pipe flanges, support the shaft along its length. Bearing lubrication is normally achieved by the pumped fluid itself, though grease or external clean-fluid lubrication is available for abrasive services.
Typical capacities range from small flows up to approximately 800–1,000 m³/h, with some specialized designs reaching higher. Heads typically reach 132 m , with design pressures up to 40 bar. Operating temperatures span from approximately −40°C to +180°C, depending on materials and construction . Pit depths of up to 10 meters or more are achievable with modular column sections.
