The API VS1(model FCDL) pump is a vertically suspended, single-casing diffuser-type centrifugal pump designed in accordance with API 610 (ISO 13709). Its defining characteristic is the wet-pit installation: the pump bowl assembly is submerged in a sump, tank, or below-grade vault, while the discharge head and driver remain accessible at grade level. This configuration minimizes the above-ground footprint and simplifies piping layouts, making it especially suitable for space-constrained installations such as offshore platforms and congested refinery units.
The VS1 pump comprises four primary components: the bowl assembly, column pipe, discharge head, and driver. The bowl assembly contains one or more stages of diffuser-type bowls with enclosed or semi-open impellers, precision-cast and hydraulically balanced to minimize vibration and wear. The column pipe connects the bowl assembly to the discharge head and encloses the drive shaft. Column sections are typically limited to approximately 1.5 meters in length, with flanged and registered connections that maintain precise shaft alignment. Product-lubricated bearings, commonly carbon graphite or rubber-lined, are spaced along the column to support the shaft while allowing the pumped fluid to serve as the lubricant.
The discharge head supports the driver and incorporates the discharge nozzle, seal chamber, and thrust bearing housing. A rigid flanged spacer coupling is typically supplied to allow servicing of the mechanical seal and thrust bearing without disturbing the driver or pump alignment. The seal chamber complies with API 682 and accommodates single or dual cartridge mechanical seals with appropriate flush plans.
Typical capacities range from small flows up to approximately 3,000–4,000 m³/h, with some specialized designs reaching higher. Differential heads range up to 300 m, and design pressures up to 40 bar.
